Climb Coropuna

4 day/3 night programme

Start and finish Arequipa

Climb to the summit of one of Peru's 'easier' 6000+m giants, Coropuna (6,425 metres), near Arequipa.

Climb a Peruvian giant

Coropuna is Arequipa’s highest peak at 6,425m – and also one of the 'easier' of Peru’s giants to climb.

It is one the largest volcanoes in Peru is covered in large glacial valleys and lateral moraines.

Coropuna's ice-covered cap suggests inactivity. Reaching Coropuna's highest point will require you to walk across this huge ice cap – an amazing experience.

Itinerary

Day 1

We leave Arequipa and drive to Majes and the village of Viraco before heading off the main raid towards Coropuna, passing beautiful lakes on the way. Camp at 4,600 metres.

Day 2

We head today for the base camp, which is situated at 5,300 metres, a six hour trek. Camp.

Day 3

It’s summit day and a long one so we set off early. It is seven hours to the top along the ice cap. Some technical equipment will be used on the way up. It’s a further 3 hours back down to base camp, where we stay the night.

Day 4

Off the volcano to our transport, which takes us on our journey back to Arequipa.

You could extend your trip by trekking the Inca Trail or visiting the Amazon.
