Cochamo and Puelo Valleys
Innumerable lakes, rivers and mountains set an extraordinary stage for horseback excursions, trekking, cycling and sea kayaking in and around the Cochamo and Puelo Valleys in Chile's Northern Patagonia.
This is where the Andes merge with the Pacific Ocean to form the first Patagonian fjord in an area of stunning beauty.
Virgin temperate rainforest with endemic tree and plant species are to be found in this part of the country with the Patagonian Cypress - some specimens are over 3,000 years old - being the most well known.
Native fauna includes Pudu (world’s smallest deer), Huemul (South Andean Deer), Puma and Patagonian skunks. The area also has a population of wild boars. Birdlife includes the condor, hen harrier, Magellanic woodpecker, Chilean flicker, Chilean pigeon, white-crested Elaenia, Magellanic horned owl, kingfisher and Chucao Tapaculo.
Cross the Northern Patagonian Andes
This is the setting for an itinerary taking you across the Andes from the Cochamo and Puelo region of Chile into the El Bolson area of Argentina with accommodation in comfortable lodges.
A two hour drive from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas leads you to your first destination where the first two nights are spent in either the Cochamo or Puelo Valley amongst spectacular scenery.
The second day offers a choice for a full day of trekking, horse riding, kayaking, biking or fly fishing.
The third night is in the splendid isolation of Las Banduarrias Island on Lake Las Rocas.
Finally head off on foot and by boat into Argentina to finish the last leg by vehicle arriving in Bariloche.
