Ampato Mountain Ascent (6,318m)

4 day/3 night programme

Start and finish Arequipa

Ampato volcano: In 1995, a 500-year-old Inca Mummy was found at the summit, almost perfectly preserved

The Ampato volcano in Peru went from obscurity to world fame when a mummy was found at its summit.

In 1995, a group of archaeologists found a mummified young Inca woman at the summit – in much the same condition as when she was sacrificed 500 years previously.

The maiden of Ampato, as she has been called, can be seen displayed in a refrigerated display case in the city museum of Santuarios Andinos Universidad Catolica Santa Maria.

Outdoor adventures

At 6,318 metres Ampato is one of the largest in the chain of three volcanoes which master the landscape of Arequipa.

All three volcanoes are an adventure site for mountain climbers and walkers and offer great views from the summit. The dry season (April-November) is the best time to scale Ampato.
