The Altiplano, a vast and luminous plateau of far distant horizons, lies at 3800m flanked to east and west by the high Andes.

Lake Titicaca occupies the northern part of Bolivia's Altiplano. It is the largest lake in South America. Its greatest archaeological legacy is the ruined ceremonial complex of Tiahuanaco.
Salar de Uyuni is one of the natural marvels of South America. This immense salt lake lies amid the stark landscapes of the windswept desert of the southern Altiplano. The intensely clear air combines with deep blue skies and the brilliant white salt to create a fantastic spectacle.

La Paz (3630m) sits within a deep canyon at the north-eastern edge of the Altiplano. It is a striking city, for its location at the foot of the towering snowpeak of Ilimani, and also for its numerous markets.

The Cordillera Real, to the north of La Paz and east of Lake Titicaca, is a jagged line of towering peaks that separate the Altiplano from the extensive rainforest to the east. The range is dominated by the 6500m summits of Illimani to the south and Illampu (6368m) to the north.

The climate of Bolivia is as varied as its geography. The best time for visiting the mountains is between May and October when you get bright sunny days and cold clear nights.
