Off the beaten track in Colombia

Colombia is divided into five main geographical regions: Pacific, Llanos, Amazon, Caribbean and Andes.

This means there is an incredible array of geography to enjoy, and hidden corners to explore.

Tourism is relatively new to foreign visitors and so it's not unusual to find yourself in places that very few have seen before.

Trekking

Some of Colombia's best kep secrets are access by hiking in: The Lost City and El Pueblito in Tayrona National Park along the Caribbean coast.

From here, you can fly to the distant Caribbean islands of San Andres and Providencia, distinct to Colombia with their own identities.

More great trekking areas include in Los Nevados in the Cocora region to see the incredilbe Paramó and frailejones plants.

El Cocuy is the most spectacular national park, with glaciers and thrusting Andean mountains surrounded by lush vegetation.

More highlights

The Tatacoa desert offers incredible sunrise colours and star gazing at night. Head to San Augustin and walk around some of the national parks which house statues up to seven metres tall.

Baricharra is a colonial town almost lost in time, a place where languid takes on an even more relaxed meaning.

"I spent seven weeks in Colombia and everywhere was so different. You will have to travel quite far to get to some areas, but it was always worth it."
