About the trip


The trip combines intensive Spanish tuition or Cuban dance classes for one week in Santiago de Cuba, with a second week trekking in the Sierra Maestra mountains including climbing Pico Turquino (1972m), the highest peak in Cuba.


The Salsa dance classes are taught by professional tutors from the Ballet Folklorico Cutumba, one of Cuba’s most famous dance and music companies whilst you study Spanish with our professionally qualified and experienced Cuban teachers.


The Pico Turquino trek is accompanied by fully qualified, bilingual specialist guides.


Included in the tour are: 13 nights accommodation, single or shared room, half board homestay or B&B hostal accommodation in Santiago de Cuba, full board in the Sierra Maestra national park in mountain refuges, B&B 3*** hotel accommodation for the last night in Havana; all group airport transfers and transport for trekking; 5 days x 3 hours of Cuban Salsa dance or Spanish language classes, 2 afternoon cultural activities, 2 nights out to live music venues, services of bilingual tour leader throughout.

  Itinerary
  Day 1

Arrive Holguin airport and transfer to Santiago de Cuba and hotel or homestay.

 
  2

Welcome briefing meeting, orientation tour of the city, afternoon cultural activity.

 
  3-7

Morning classes x 3 hours (Spanish or Cuban dance), 2 afternoon cultural visits, 3 accompanied evenings out to live music venues and clubs.

 
  8

Transfer to Santa Domingo via Bayamo. Overnight stop and prepare for trek.

 
  9

Travel by truck to Alto de Naranjo, visit La Comandancia, Fidel’s strategic base in the Sierra Maestra mountains, lunch and afternoon visit to La Platica ecological community. Overnight in Santa Domingo.

Early morning departure for 4-5 hours walking to the Aguada de Joaquin refuge, our overnight stop. Lunch en route.

 
  11

Climb Pico Turquino and descend to La Majagua refuge (6-7 hours walking). Overnight stop.

 
  12

Descend to Las Cuevas on the coast (2 hours), transfer to Santiago de Cuba. Free afternoon and last night party in Santiago de Cuba.

Morning flight to Havana and free afternoon to explore the city. Evening cultural activity.

 
  14

Optional guided walking tour of Old Havana and visit to craft markets. Transfer to airport for evening flight back to UK.
