Cuban Summer School (CASS)

  Cuban Summer School

Cuban Arts Summer School - Santiago de Cuba

Spanish, Arts and Culture.

Our Cuban Arts Summer School is based in Santiago de Cuba in a colonial style mansion house in the very heart of the city.

The annual Festival del Fuego (Festival of Fire) is held at this time of year and provides a spectacular week of live music and dance and lively street processions with participants from all over the Caribbean. Our Summer School offers you a choice of Cuban dance, percussion, painting or Spanish language classes, providing you with the opportunity to work with some of Cuban top professional tutors and artistes.

Our school has a large open courtyard, an exhibition room, a small cafe serving hot and cold refreshments and snacks and plenty of space for sitting and studying in peace and quiet.

The course includes 15 group lessons per week (maximum of 8 students per group) as follows: Monday – Friday, 1000-1200 + Tuesday/Thursday, 1400-1600. Each class is 50 minutes.

Choose two from the following: Cuban dance, percussion, painting and/or Spanish language. You should choose one subject for the morning and another for the afternoon lessons for two weeks e.g. Spanish language x 10 mornings and Cuban dance x 4 afternoons. All subjects are offered from beginner to more advanced levels.

Also included in course fees are a talk on Cuban music, dance and Santeria, the Afro-Cuban religion; a city tour of Santiago including a visit to Moncada Barracks; an afternoon visit outside town to a place of local interest; a weekend trip to Santo Domingo in the Sierra Maestra mountains to visit the mountain community of La Platica and La Comandancia (Fidel's secret headquarters in the Sierra Maestra during the revolution); all transportation for trips and excursions and an extensive social and cultural programme accompanied by a bilingual tour leader.

Fees also include single or shared homestay accommodation with breakfast and evening meal x 11 nights + 2 nights in shared rooms in hotel/hostel/mountain refuge with breakfast and picnic lunch when visiting Santo Domingo. Two weeks, including all tuition, accommodation, the weekend excursion, afternoon visits and an extensive programme of cultural visits and social activities costs just £850 per person.

Accommodation runs from Sunday 3 to Saturday 16 July. Extra nights in homestay accommodation can be arranged at a cost of £25 per night, single room with breakfast and evening meal.

Flights and airport transfers are not included but we can book these if required. Hotel accommodation in Santiago can be arranged on request at extra cost.
