The Galapagos archipelago comprises over 50 islands of volcanic origin, that are spread over 4,500 square kilometres, approximately 1,000km off the coast of Ecuador.

They are a paradise of stunning volcanic landscapes and fearless animals. There are designated visitor sites on each of the islands, where our variety of boats land.

Giant tortoises, fur seals, sea lions, sea iguanas, and the comic blue-footed boobies, are just some of the prolific animals and birds that will entertain you as you wander through their homes.

The archipelago is a year round destination and our Galapagos weather section will guide you through monthly highlights.

Please check our Galapagos Islands section where you will find more information on the specific islands.

Climate

Please see our Galapagos weather page for seasonal highlights.

The climate in the islands in strongly influenced by the presence of oceanic currents, the relatively cold Humboldt Current and the warm tropical current from the Gulf of Panama. These currents converge north of the islands, but the meeting point moves south from January to April and the warmer current flows round the islands.

There are two marked seasons in the Galapagos, the warmer months with occasional heavy rain from January to May/June and the cooler drier months from May/June to December, caused by the presence of the Humboldt Current. Visit our Diving page for more information about the fantastic diving that the Galapagos offers.

During the cooler months there are overcast skies and little rain in the lowlands, but considerable garúa (mist) and rain in the highlands. February is the hottest month of the year and August and September the coolest when you may need a jacket in the evenings. The seas are choppy in the cooler months when southeast winds prevail, and sea temperatures are also cooler, around 20°C.

From January to June the average sea temperature is around 25°C. The weather between the two marked seasons is generally somewhat unpredictable, and also varies from one part of the archipelago to another. Rainfall at sea level is less than 350mm, while in the highlands it can be over 1,000mm.

Sample Day

Aboard our vessels, your day begins after breakfast when you go ashore with your naturalist guide in small boats, called "pangas". The well marked paths will lead you to discover the most fascinating wildlife, from blue footed boobies, iguanas, sea lions to the rare Galapagos penguins. Snorkeling is encouraged, and there is an opportunity to explore underwater almost every day.

Returning to your vessel midday, a delicious lunch awaits and perhaps a short "siesta", while sailing on to the next visitor's site. The rest of the afternoon is spent on shore, before returning to your ship to enjoy a spectacular sunset.

After dinner, the naturalist guide will offer a briefing of the next day's activities. Since each island has its own unique landscape and diverse species of animal and plant life, every day is a new adventure.

*Occasionally the captain may find it necessary to vary the itinerary, due to Galapagos National Park regulations, weather conditions, route availability, facility for the cruise to reach the desired point of visit, to prevent the migration and protect the flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands, and also for domestic flights alterations and acts of providence.

Crew - Guides / Information

The crews are "Galapagueños", most of our guides, captains and  crew members were born and raised in the Galapagos Islands.

They know the area well and are prepared to show you the islands only like a native can do it.

Our Naturalist-English Speaking Guides have studied and been trained at Charles Darwin Scientific Station, and have long years of experience guiding at the Galapagos Islands.
