Discover the Jungle

This 8-day trek gives you the unique opportunity to discover the majestic Kaieteur Falls and Guyana’s fascinating and unspoilt rainforest on foot.

Discover the jungle by foot and canoe, cool off at Guyana’s many waterfalls and get close to nature as you spot a jaguar (if you are lucky!) or admire the bright orange Cock of the Rock. Our experienced local guides make this adventure a very special one as they share their knowledge of Guyana’s fascinating flora and fauna, and tell the ancient tales of their ancestors. At night you camp in beautiful locations where you’ll experience the unforgettable sounds of the rainforest by night.

Note: If circumstances dictate, certain details, such as overnight stops, may vary from those shown below.

Monday

Arrival in Georgetown. Pick up and transfer to Cara Lodge, a 150-year-old heritage building converted into a beautiful small hotel.

Tuesday

This morning discover Georgetown on a guided tour. In the afternoon you will have a briefing on the overland trip and prepare your gear.

Overnight at Cara Lodge. (B)

Wednesday

It is an early start as you depart Georgetown at 6.30am for an 8 hour journey inland, passing through the town of Linden, then through miles and miles of lush rainforest and rolling hills. Your journey takes you to the bustling gold-mining town of Mahdia, and on to Pamela Landing. From here it is 2 ½ hours by boat to Amatuk, a beautiful island of white sand, with the 170 ft drop Amatuk falls just a few yards away.

Overnight at Camp Amatuk. (B/L/D)

Thursday

Today you set off by foot, trekking through the jungle, swimming across creeks and walking across bridges made of tree trunks. A short boat-ride through the rapids and you arrive at Waratuk where you camp for the night.

Overnight at Waratuk Camp. (B/L/D)

Friday

After a good night’s sleep and a delicious breakfast, you trek to Tukiet with the enigmatic Ibini mountain range in a distance as your constant companion. After another short boat ride and you reach Tukiet at the bottom of the Kaieteur Falls just in time for lunch.

A cool dip in the river and a healthy meal will put you in top gear to begin your climb up the ‘O my God’ mountain. Did you say you liked challenges? After four and a half exhilarating hours of scrambling you reach the top. The feeling of achievement is indescribable as you take in the spectacular view of the mighty Kaieteur Falls, the highest single-drop waterfalls in the world.

Overnight at Kaieteur Guest House. (B/L/D)

Saturday

A tour around the Kaieteur Park will prove to be a truly fascinating experience. You will get the chance to view the Kaieteur Falls from several view points that offer excellent photo opportunities.

With a little patience you can get a close- up view of the beautiful, but poisonous ‘golden frog’ and, if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of the brilliantly coloured, orange ‘Cock-of-the-rock’. The local flora boasts pretty carnivores’ plants, some of which feed on insects, and beautiful, wild flowers, including the decorative Heliconia.

Overnight at Kaieteur Guest House. (B/L/D)

Sunday

After another night at the top of the Kaieteur, it is time to say our farewell. On the plane to Georgetown you get a final, spectacular aerial view of Kaieteur Falls and the gorge and the awe-inspiring expanse of rainforest and rivers.
