Lake Titicaca, Floating islands of Uros and Taquile
Venture to the far corner of Peru and the wonder of Lake Titicaca; its floating islands, its friendly Indian people and its serenity.
Cruise from Puno to Taquile, via the baffling Uros floating reed islands, where the people continually harvest and matt together reeds in order to sustain their lifestyles.
Taquile is a small but remote island on the lake, the world’s highest navigable body of water. There is no electricity, only a beautiful island and people far removed from most Peruvian cultures.
Sillustani ruins
Sillustani is a sacred site of chullpas, or funerary towers, some 35km from Puno. Excavation work in the 1970s revealed that hunter gatherers lived here more than 8,000 years ago.
The Incas conquered the site in 1440 and Sillustani became an important graveyard for Inca nobles. There are detailed carvings on the outside of the towers, many of which are unfinished.
The location is remote and starkly beautiful and easy to see why this peninsula, jutting into Lake Umayo, was chosen. When chiefs were buried in ceremonies lasting several days, their women and animals were sometimes sacrificed with them, as it was believed that their spirits would live on.
The tombs are easy to visit, especially if you arrive by air into the nearby Juliaca airport. Our guides can meet you at the airport and take you to Puno via the tombs.
