Self-drive holidays in Patagonia

Patagonia self-drive tours give you the freedom to go at your own pace, exploring the long empty roads and stunning scenery by car, 4wd or jeep.

There are plenty of choices for activities along the way and a variety of accommodation to choose from.

Drive the Carretera Austral for vast ice-covered mountain ranges, fast-flowing rivers, dramatic lakes and waterfalls. Drive from Puerto Montt south crossing fjords on small ferries, overnight at local guesthouses.

Alternatively, fly to Balmaceda airport. Pick up the 4 by 4 or jeep in Balmaceda or Coiyhaique and head south towards Villa O’Higgins. This long winding, beautifully quiet road leads you smoothly from one breathtaking highlight to another.

Stop off and enjoy walking in the parks en route – Patagonia park, Pumalin, Cerro Castillo, there are 17 parks on this innovative Ruta de los Parques.

A self-drive road trip through this amazing wilderness area is undoubtedly a memorable experience. Everybody you meet gives a warm Chilean welcome. The pace of life is slow and there is always time for a chat.

We organise a winter self-drive programme, in Torres del Paine. We will set up the car hire and accommodation and arrange to add on activities, guided walks, boat trips and so on. This adventure allows you to see this busy national park, the jewel in Chile’s crown, in its quietest season.

If you like the idea of travelling Patagonia by car we can arrange accommodation to suit for all overnight stops along the way. Choose between lodges, eco-camps, glamping yurts, hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfast, campsites – to suit all budgets.

Patagonia self-drive tours offer the flexibility to visit amazing parts of this wonderful land at a pace to suit you.

We had a number of highlights: seeing pumas in Torres del Paine- the pumas were a bit of a distance away and had their backs to us for most of the sighting!

Overall, the whole trip was extremely well-organised and delivered.
