Choquequirao.
This is an off-the-beaten track trekking adventure in the remote Cordillera Vilcabamba range culminating in a visit to the Machu Picchu ruins.
Choquequirao, the “Cradle of Gold”, is an amazingly preserved Inca outpost, comparable in size to Machu Picchu and dramatically located on a promontory nearly 1,700m above the roaring Apurimac river.
It is only accessible by a tough trek. Our 8-day mule supported hike to Choquequirao and beyond takes in high passes, perfectly preserved Inca Trails and awesome Andean peaks, ending with a spectacular and rarely seen view of Machu Picchu and a full guided tour of these incredible ruins.
This is a long, spectacular and strenuous hike crossing the entire Vilcabamba mountain range from the Apurimac to the Urubamba watershed. It is approximately 100Km long with almost 6,000m of both ascent and descent with passes up to 4,500m and river crossings as low as 1450m.
This is your chance to be amongst one of the few adventurers to visit this incredible site and complete this rewarding trek to Machu Picchu.
Eco-systems
We pass through an immense range of vegetation types and temperatures and with a variety of panoramic views to match: from the ice-capped peaks of the high Andes, their sharp ridges, deep gorges and raging rivers to the lush flora and prolific wildlife of the sub-tropical rainforest.
Choquequirau is dramatically situated on the spur of the mountain range of Salcantay, at 3035 m, surrounded by the snow capped peaks of Yanama, Ampay, Choquetacarpo, Pumasillo and Panta.
You could extend your holiday with trip into the Amazon rainforest.
