Cuncani Tree Planting
Deforestation in the Andes and the Amazon is a huge issue, and Andean Trails is helping to tackle the problem head on.
In 2010, we provided 3,500 native polylepis trees to the Cuncani community. Organisers, volunteers and community members there headed to the mountains and plant the trees on the slopes.
This will benefit the community as the project is run locally by ECOAN, and all the money stays in the local economy. Seedlings are bought locally, community members are paid a small amount to help plant and given trees for their villages also.
Background information
In Peru, deforestation of the Andes and the Amazon and the loss of most of the major glaciers pose a risk of a serious shortage of water.
By working to reforest some of the Andean valleys, Andean Trails and ECOAN hope to make a positive impact and be part of the responsible tourism movement.
Hopefully, tourism in Peru can be run in as sustainable a way possible to ensure the amazing places we
travel through can be enjoyed for many generations to come.
As important is that the local communities benefit from our travelling through their backyards.
