This trekking holiday in the Altiplano of Chile's Atacama desert is the best of both worlds combining 4 days of treks with a vehicle tour to salt flats and altiplanic lakes, camping near indigenous villages and hotel accommodation in the town of San Pedro.
Exploring with a difference
This itinerary gives you the opportunity to get a much closer look at the Atacama.
Most people just stay in the town of San Pedro and visit the attractions during the day by vehicle. Not on this trip.
This journey involves trekking along mountain trails, wading through rivers and camping near the indigenous village of Rio Grande with the chance of getting to know its people.
It also includes trekking through some of the driest parts of the planet and camping near the Machuca bofedales, grasslands brimming with wildlife.
Before going to sleep, the star filled skies will be the backdrop and possibly a shooting star or two as well.
The archaeological site of Quitor and the ghost town of San Bartolo are part of the itinerary.
During this trip you should be able to spot condors soaring overhead, guanacos roaming the plains and many other species in their natural habitat including pink flamingoes at the Atacama salt flat.
