Quilquaihuanca.

Route of the Condor

5 to 9 days

Start/end Huaraz

Trek through Quilquaihuanca in the Cordillera Blanca mountain region of Peru

This adventure trek (67km) takes you through some of the most dramatic and un-walked parts of the Cordillera Blanca, with excellent opportunities for Condor viewing and superb mountain views from the two high passes (5,100m & 5,350m).

Note : You have the option to extend the trip with some easy mountaineering, the ascent of the non-technical peaks of Maparaju (5,326m), Huapi (5,200m) and/or Ishinca (5,530m), making it an 8 or 9 day trek.

Outline Itinerary

Day 1

Our vehicle takes you from Huaraz to nearby Pitec (3,850m) at the entrance to Quebrada Quilcayhuanca, starting point of the trek. A gentle trek up this broad Andean valley takes you to our camp at Olivo, where big mountains lie ahead, and condors soar above. You could opt for a one day ascent of the non-technical peak of Maparaju from this camp (5,326m).

Day 2

Today you trek upwards from Olivo to the glacier lake of Cuchillacocha, getting ever closer to the peaks of Pucaranra (6,156m), Tullparaju (5,787m) and Chinchey (6,222m). The scenery is spectacular. Camp nearby.

Day 3

Continuing upwards, cross the first pass today at over 5,000m, with one of the best mountain views in Peru, 360 degrees of immense snow and ice covered peaks. Descend a steep goat track to the base of the typically U-shaped glaciated valley of Cojup, camp.

Day 4

Today trek up and over the next high pass, at 5,350m, this time crossing ice-as you reach the highest point of the day. Crampons and ice-axe are needed. Ranrapalca (6,162m) looms high above you and Ishinca peak (5,530m) just off to your right. Tonights camp is high, at around 5,000m. This is the Ishinca moraine camp, from which Ishinca can be climbed in just a few hours.

Day 5

Today head back to Huaraz, with a beautiful trek down the Ishinca valley through polylepis forest to reach Collon, before meeting up with the vehicle for the short ride back to town.

You could extend your trip by trekking the Inca Trail or visiting the Amazon.
