Route 109 self-drive

Route 109 between Aigua and La Roncha in eastern Uruguay is one of the country’s most scenic roads.

It curves through the countryside, occasionally switching to a dirt road, but mostly on a good-quality surface, with little traffic.

The 45-mile route connects the town of Aiguá in the northern Maldonado department with the city of Rocha.

You’ll drive past the green hills with boulders and streams of Sierra de Carapé and the Sierras de Rocha, accompanied by panoramic views most of the way as you wind through forests and farms.

En route, you’ll also pass Uruguay’s highest peak, the famous Cerro Catedral, which stands at a not-so-mighty 513m/1,685ft.
