The Chapada Diamantina is a national park and ecological paradise in Bahia, northeastern Brazil, widely considered Brazil’s ultimate outdoor and eco-adventure destination.
Chapada Diamantina, Diamond Plateau in English, is a series of flat-topped mountains linked by forested valleys, rivers, swimming holes, and waterfalls.
This former diamond mining hub features dramatic tabletop mountains, cavernous canyons, and flooded underground caves. More than 300 waterfalls come to life during the rainy season (December to April).
Cachoeira da Fumaça is one of the most famous, with water often dissipating into mist as it falls over 300 metres to the forest floor. Ribeirão do Meio is popular as a natural waterslide, and Cachoeira do Buracão is only accessible by swimming through a towering canyon.
Day trips also include the colourful Gruta da Lapa Doce cave system walk. Extended trekking itineraries like Vale do Pati (3-5 days) into this vast wilderness are also popular.
