The iconic Kicker Rock, or León Dormido, is one of the most impressive sights off San Cristóbal: the remains of an underwater volcano rising vertically 150m/492ft out of the sea.
The exposed cone has fractured in two, leaving a wildlife-rich sea channel and one of the Galápagos’ classic snorkelling and diving sites. Beneath the surface, sheer rock walls plunge into deep blue water, making the setting almost as memorable as the wildlife.
Jump in the water and drift with the current through the cleft, keeping an eye out below for sea turtles, manta rays, rays, and maybe the usually shy Galápagos shark. Hammerheads are also occasionally seen here.
On the cliffs, spot Blue-footed Boobies, Nazca Boobies and magnificent Frigatebirds.
