More about the districts of Buenos Aires

San Telmo’s barrio of cobbled streets, with its fluctuating history of wealth and bohemia, now houses a myriad of designer stores, art galleries, independent theatres, trendy bars and posh restaurants.

San Telmo also offers bargains and unusual items for the most avid of market shoppers and the Sunday fair is an incredible sight.

Football fans cannot miss a match involving River or Boca, or perhaps attend the classic between the two.

Avenida de Mayo is a Parisian-inspired boulevard with a distinctive spirit of cafés and restaurants, as well as the maginificent Teatro Avenida, the city’s second opera house.

The port district of La Boca is a working class district, where many Italian immigrants settled during the late 19th century. Some houses are made out of tin and painted a myriad of colours.

La Boca is home to Caminito Street, an outdoors tango and soccer museum plus Boca Juniors’ stadium.

Puerto Madero, north of the river, is Buenos Aires’ most modern and sophisticated area, with trendy apartment buildings, restaurants and night clubs.

The Retiro district features the splendid Plaza San Martin, the former Palacio Paz, nowadays the Círculo Militar (Military Society), the Palacio San Martín and the Plaza Hotel.

Recoleta is famed for housing Cartier, Hermès and Louis Vuitton. In Plaza Francia, there is the colonial Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, the second oldest in town, plus the celebrated Recoleta Cemetery, where many of the greatest personalities of Argentinian history are buried, Eva Perón included.

Palermo Soho, the Buenos Aires version of the New York namesake district, is full of boutiques, designer stores, trendy restaurants and bars.

Day 2: Half-day walking tour, hotel (B)

The tour starts at your hotel in the downtown area of the city. Your guide picks you up and take you to the main points of interest of this area. You visit the Plaza de Mayo where you will see other important buildings including “La Casa Rosada” (the government house), “El Cabildo”.

(City Hall), and the Cathedral of Buenos Aires. You also walk along the pedestrian street of Florida, where you will be able to visit Galerias Pacífico and see its incredible paintings on the roof.

Please note that this is a walking tour only. The tour will last approximately 3 hours.

Return to your hotel / continuing exploring the city by yourselves.

Day 3: Free time. Optional bike tour, hotel (B)

Day free to explore the city.

Please enquire about the option of other tours including a bike tour (extra cost).

Argentina’s capital is unlike any other in South America, and probably the world. It fuses European-style architecture, South American passion and a creativity unrivalled elsewhere on the continent. Its diversity is its strength, from its old world feel to its contemporary attitude.

You can eat in some of the finest restaurants dining on the best steaks, enjoy intense nightlife, grand parks and visit incredible museums. All of this, in glossy neighbourhoods, rubs shoulders with unkempt streets full of fervour.

You can explore this classic Buenos Aires too, the old world cafes, bustling markets and colonial architecture.

Day 4: Transfer out to airport, ends (B)

You will be picked up at your hotel at the agreed time and driven to the airport in a private vehicle with Spanish-speaking driver.

Onward travel.

Tango is synonymous with Argentina. If you wish to participate, visit a milonga. Milongas are informal gatherings where people go have a drink, a chat and most importantly dance tango. If you wish to watch, take in one of the many tango shows the city has to offer. I'd recommend a tango show to all visitors.

Practical Information

Geography of Argentina

Argentina’s neighbours are Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay to the north, Uruguay to the north east and Chile to the west. In the east Argentina has a long South Atlantic Ocean coastline.

The central region of Argentina is the rich plain known as La Pampa.

There is jungle in the extreme northeast while the southern half of Argentina is dominated by the flat to rolling plateau of Patagonia.

The western border with Chile is along the rugged Andes mountains, including Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside the Himalayas. Close to Aconcagua lies Mendoza, an area famed for its fine wine production.

The western Cuyo regions at the base of the Andes are mostly rocky desert.

Most Antarctic cruises embark and disembark in Ushuaia, at the tip of South America, allowing access to the South Pole, South Georgia and also the Falkland Islands.

Introduction to Argentina

Argentina is a land of contrast.

Nothing states this better than the fact it features the highest point in the South America, Aconcagua, and the lowest, Salinas Chicas, 40m below sea level.

Its vastness – it is the eighth largest country in the world – and diversity are just part of the appeal. A fantastic culture of fine wine and dining sits alongside its adventurous and beautiful landscapes.

The local’s cheery disposition and fantastic word plays add to the enjoyment of being in this fascinating country.

The name Argentina derives from argentinos, the Ancient Greek diminutive (tinos) form for silver (argentos), which is what early Spanish explorers sought when they first reached the region in the sixteenth century.

There are distinct regions of Argentina, from the Andean culture of the North West to the rancho lifestyle of the plains of Patagonia to the eternally seductive Buenos Aires.

Kit list

Good kit is vital for every trip.

Book with Andean Trails and get 15% off Páramo’s fantastic ethical and high performance outdoor gear.

Overview

Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world, and has a myriad of climates from humid tropics to bracingly cold Patagonia.

When planning for these changeable climatic conditions you will encounter across Argentina, layering is the most practical and versatile clothing system.
